Siberian Gulags travel 4,000 miles on foot to freedom in India.
During World War II, following the Soviet invasion of Poland, young Polish Army officer Janusz Wiszek (Jim Sturgess) is hired as a POW and interrogated by the NKVD. The Soviets, unable to admit to him that she was a spy, took his wife into custody; From him they make out a statement condemning him. He is sentenced to 20 years in the Gulag labor camp deep in Siberia.
There he meets the people he plans to run away with: Mr. Smith (Ed Harris), an American engineer; Khabarov (Mark Strong), an actor; Valka (Colin Farrell), a hardened Russian criminal; Tomasz (Alexandru Potosian), a Polish artist; Vos (Gustaf Skarsgard), a Latvian priest; Kazik (Sebastian Urjandowski), a Pole who suffers from night blindness; and Zoran (Dragos Bukur), a Yugoslav accountant. Khabarov secretly tells Janus that he plans to go south to Mongolia, passing Lake Baikal. Smith cautioned Janus that this was Khabarov’s way of discussing an escape plan with the newcomers, keeping his morale up, but that would lead to nothing. Sometimes Janus seems to confuse the front door of a country house and the surrounding window sill with plants and a rock that he attempts to reach. Janusz escapes with Smith, Valka, Voss, Tomas, Zoran and Kazik during a severe blizzard that covers their tracks.
