The true story of the experiences of pianist Vladislav Szpilman in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation. When the city’s Jews find themselves forced into a ghetto, Szpilman gets a job playing in a cafe; And when his family is deported in 1942, he is left behind, briefly working as a laborer, and eventually hides in the ruins of a war-torn city.
In September 1939, Polish-Jewish pianist Vladivostok Szepilman was playing live on the radio in Warsaw when the station was bombed by the Nazis during Germany’s invasion of Poland. Hoping for a quick victory, Szilmann rejoices at home with his family when he learns that Britain and France declared war on Germany. But the promised help does not come. With both German and Soviet armies attacking Poland on different fronts at the same time, the fighting lasted just over a month. Warsaw became part of the Nazi-controlled general government. Jews are soon barred from working or carrying on their own business, and are also dressed in the Blue Star of David Armand.
By November 1940, Szizlman and his family are forced to move away from their home in the overcrowded Warsaw ghetto, where conditions only get worse. People starve, watchmen are cruel and hungry children are lying on the streets. On one occasion, the Eszlepamins witnesses an entire family being killed in an apartment on SS Street during a round-up.
On August 16, 1942, Spiralman and his family were taken to a camp to exterminate Treblinka as part of Operation Reard. But a friend in the Jewish Jewish police recognizes Vladislav in The Haskalagplot, and separates him from his family. He becomes a slave laborer, and learns of the impending Jewish rebellion. He helps the Resistance by smuggling weapons into the ghetto, in a location to escape a suspicious guard. Szicpilman eventually manages to escape, and goes into hiding with the help of a Gentile friend, Lady Bogki, and his wife, Jenna.
