The Avalon, a sleeper ship that carries 5,000 colonists and 258 crew members in hibernation pods, is on a 120-year-long journey to the planet Homestead II. Thirty years into the journey, an asteroid collision damages the ship and also wakes its computer, at the age of 90, to a passenger, mechanical engineer Jim Preston.
After a year of separation, with only one android barman named Arthur for the company, Jim becomes discouraged and contemplates suicide, but cannot bring himself to do with it. One day, he saw a beautiful young woman named Aurora Lane inside her pod. Jim looks at Aurora’s video file and smiles with his comical personality. After struggling with the morality of reviving Aurora for companionship, robbing her of her life before arriving on a new planet, she wakes him up, making her think her pod has gone bad. Jim then asks Arthur to keep the secret as he wakes her up. Aurora, devastated to live her life on the ship, tries unsuccessfully to re-enter hibernation. A journalist started writing a book about his experiences.
