Movie Plot: Katherine Newbury is an acclaimed talk show host with an extensive career in comedy, but her show’s ratings have seen a steady decline over the past decade. The network’s president, Carolyn Morton, asks Katherine to fix or replace her show. In an effort to revive the show, Katherine hires Molly Patel for her writing staff, largely on the grounds that she is an Indian-American woman while many of the writers are white men. Although Molly has little comedy experience and initially struggles, she finds Herdin able to work with her show as well as teach him how to get ideas to a larger audience. The results prove to be successful.
Katherine knows that Caroline wants to replace young, popular comedian Daniel Tencent as the new host. Katherine protests, because Daniels’ comedy is rude and inaccurate. With backup from her writers, Katherine considers the network’s demands and decides on the air to continue her career.
