On 21 September 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, a teenage boy, Sita, dies of starvation at the Kobe train station. A watchman searches his property and finds a candy tin, which he throws in a field. The spirit of Sita’s younger sister, Setsuko, emerges from the tin and is joined by Sita’s spirit and a firefly cloud. They board a train.
A few months ago, Seita and Setsuko’s house is destroyed by a fire along with most of Kobe. They are not harmed, but their mother dies of severe burns. Sita and Setsuko move in with a distant aunt, who convinces Sita to sell her mother’s silk kimono for rice. Sita retrieves supplies buried before the bombing and gives everything but a tin of Sakuma to her aunt. As rations become less and the number of refugees in the house increases, the aunt becomes angry with the children, saying that they do nothing to earn the food prepared by her.
