Kip Raines (Giovanni Ribisi), an aspiring car thief in Los Angeles, is working with his gang to steal fifty expensive cars for Raymond Calitri (Christopher Eccleston), a British gangster who has worked as Calitri’s ally. The medium has inexplicably taken over organized crime in Long Beach. , Atlee Jackson (Will Patton). At the last heist, their actions attract the attention of the police, and they avoid being caught, though are forced to leave the warehouse and the bulk of the cars they steal. Detectives Castlebeck (Delroy Lindo) and Drykoff (Timothy Olyphant) seize the cars and begin an investigation.
Calitri kidnaps Kip and threatens to kill him if he doesn’t get the job. Attlee, sympathetic to Kip’s plight, meets Kip’s older brother, Randall “Memphis” Raines (Nicholas Cage), a former car thief who drove straight years earlier, and explains the situation. Memphis meets with Caitri to negotiate Kip’s release, but in return, Caitri forces Memphis to agree to steal fifty cars within 72 hours or else he will kill Kip.
