Lenny Bellardo became the first American pope and was named Pius XIII. Soon after his election, he caused turmoil in the Vatican with his desire to reject both the campaigning and the liberal philosophy of his predecessor. Sister Mary, the nun who raised Lenny, was brought in as his personal secretary, and immediately established herself as a major rival to the Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Voiello. Lenny’s mentor and Pope’s favorite Cardinal Spencer, Papa is upset over his election defeat. Despite the efforts of the Spanish and Voillo, Lena plans to revive Orthodox Christianity. Lenny is forced to explain to Voello that liberal forces in the College of Cardinals blocked the choice of the conservative Spencer as pope, resulting in an agreement between the two men to use Lenny as a puppet. When Lenny Voello threatened to expel him, the benevolent cardinal was forced to swear allegiance to him. Later, during a casual encounter with Esther, the wife of a Pontifical Swiss Guard, Lenny makes a seizure.
After the birth of Esther’s child, Lenny finally meets the Italian Prime Minister, a man of the same age and an attraction to himself. Laney gives him a list of shocking and strong demands, using political blackmail to get his way. Lenny Cardinal Dusollier, his childhood friend and now in charge of approving new priests, is to block the entrance of new priests who do not observe clerical celibacy – and homosexuals, regardless of their observance. A youth seminary in St Peter’s Square refused to obey and committed suicide.
